This Is Not a Glow-Up Routine: The Truth About Kids’ Skincare

We’ve all seen the news, beauty is fast becoming part of our children’s culture and social circles. From TikTok tutorials and colourful store displays to skincare birthday parties, children are being convinced that they need serums and anti-aging routines before they’ve even hit their teens. But here’s the truth: piling on too many products, especially those with harsh chemicals meant for adults’ skin, can do more harm than good for young skin.

As a mum of two, and with two decades of experience in child development, I know how important is to support children growing healthy and confident, and without falling for beauty hypes. In this article I am set to find the truth about what children and pre-teens really need when it comes to looking after their skin.

More Products Don’t Equal Better Skin

Children’s skin is different from our adult skin. The outer layer is thinner, the barrier is still developing, and it holds less water and natural moisture. Preteens also have fewer protective oils and less of the good bacteria that helps adult skin stay balanced. That means our children’s skin is more sensitive and vulnerable to irritation, barrier damage, and allergic reactions.

As they hit puberty, hormones begin to increase oil production and sebum. That’s why shine, clogged pores, and blemishes can suddenly appear. However, rushing to buy heavy creams, scrubs, or serums is not the solution.

Research shows that adult beauty products often contain ingredients like retinoids, exfoliating acids, parabens, and phthalates which are all linked to risks ranging from chronic sensitivities to hormonal disruptions. Overloading on these products at such young age can, in fact, disrupt their skin natural barrier, causing more breakouts, eczema flare-ups, or even early hormonal changes.

How Did We Get Here?

It’s not just what’s inside the bottle, it’s how the bottles are sold. Children and pre-teens are now a fast growing consumer market. A recent review in Pediatric Dermatology highlighted how children are being nudged towards anti-aging and skin-lightening routines where unrealistic beauty standards and anxiety about wrinkles or skin tone were identified as early as age 12.

Parents Magazine also reported on the rise of “glow-up” videos with experts warning these trends don’t just waste money but can fuel body image pressures and expose children to products that cause more harm than good.

As parents, guiding children and teens away from this hype is not just about protecting their skin health but laying strong foundations of self-care, self-esteem and resilience.

What Children’s Skin Actually Needs

The good news is that healthy habits don’t require a 10-step shelf of products. Paediatric dermatologists consistently recommend sticking to only these three daily steps:

  • Gentle Cleanser – washes away excess oil, sweat and dirt without stripping.

  • Lightweight Moisturiser – hydrates without clogging pores or making skin greasy.

  • Daily Sunscreen – protects against long-term damage.

That’s all. No retinol, no strong acids, no “miracle” anti-aging serums. Just protection, hydration, and balance.

Building Habits That Last

Establishing a simple skincare ritual helps children and preteens build healthy self-care habits for life. It’s less about “glowing up” and more about learning to care for their skin and body in a way that keeps it protected and safe.

Start with a simple ritual: wash, hydrate, protect. This teaches children and preteens to respect their skin, just like brushing teeth every morning and night.

Choose gentle, child-safe formulations that help children feel comfortable in their own skin—literally. Parents can make this a moment of connection too—reading labels together and steering children away from trend-driven products with harsh chemicals.

At Dopamine, we’ve designed and tested our products to be chid-safe formulations: minimal ingredients, no hidden toxins, no harsh chemicals, perfectly gentle for sensitive skin and even reef-safe. That means no parabens, phthalates, or allergen-heavy fragrances—just clean, trustworthy care that parents can trust and children can wear, all day.
